Active Adult Communites and Covid-19 Pool Safety

Everyone wants to enjoy the community pool during the hot summer season, but this year everything looks a little different.

If Stay at Home orders are no longer in place, it’s important that swimming pools open in a safe manner that reduces the spread of COVID-19. The good news is the outdoor pool environment lends itself to successfully accomplishing this objective as social Distancing is easily achieved .

Aside from posting that a social distance policy is in effect at the pool, you may also want to limit the number of people allowed inside the pool area at any one time. Essentially you are creating a new ‘Social Distancing Capacity’. By lowering the number of people allowed at the pool, you make it possible, and more likely, for people to maintain minimum 6 ft. distancing.

Here are some important questions to explore with your community management team:

  • What are your state and local distancing guidelines?
  • How busy is your pool?
  • How well do your pool patrons voluntarily follow policies?
  • What will keep your residents safe?
  • What will bring pool users peace of mind?
  • What are fair guidelines?

As your work to re-open your community pool it’s important to:

  • Establish a maximum number of people allowed in the pool at one time.
  • Set up blocks of pool time for people to reserve.
  • Establish a disinfecting schedule.
  • Establish a reservation method.

The CDC produced an outline for "Aquatic Venues" that you and your team can review as your work on your pool safety strategy. Some suggestions include:

  1. Requiring face coverings while not in the pool
  2. Having adequate supplies on hand to support healthy hygiene habits
  3. Proper signs and messaging about how to stop the spread of COVID-19

They outline additional topics like water systems, modified layouts, physical barriers, communal spaces and shared objects.
